Ilkley Town Council has announced the launch of its brand-new Citizen Award Scheme, designed to honour the extraordinary individuals who make a real difference in our community.
Whether it’s through volunteer work, exceptional kindness, or dedication to improving the town, the new awards aim to shine a spotlight on the everyday heroes who help make Ilkley such a wonderful place to live.
The Citizen Award Scheme is open to all residents of Ilkley and Ben Rhydding, with the aim of recognizing those who go above and beyond to support their neighbours, local causes, or the wider community. The awards are an opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to those whose actions often go unnoticed, but whose impact is immeasurable.
"We’re so proud to introduce this scheme," says Deputy Mayor of Ilkley, Councillor Jane Gibson.
"Ilkley is full of people who are always willing to lend a hand, give their time, and show compassion, but often their hard work and selflessness go unrecognised. We wanted to create a formal way of celebrating these unsung heroes, and we hope the awards will inspire others to get involved in making Ilkley an even better place for all."
How It Works: The scheme is simple! Anyone can nominate a resident who they believe deserves recognition for their positive contributions to the community. Whether they’ve volunteered at local charities, organised events, helped a neighbour in need, or simply gone the extra mile to make Ilkley a better place, this is the perfect opportunity to show your appreciation.
Nominations can be downloaded from the Ilkley Town Council website ITC Citizen Award Scheme, with an easy-to-use form that allows residents, and community organisations to share the reasons why they believe their nominee should receive an award. The Town Council will review all nominations and select the winners, who will receive a special award at the Annual Town Meeting in March 2025.
Awards Categories:
• Voluntary Organisation Volunteer of the Year
Each voluntary organisation providing a service in the Ilkley area will be asked to nominate their volunteer of the year. Winners will be invited to the Annual Town Meeting to receive a certificate of thanks, and each organisation may host a promotional stall.
• Young Volunteer of the Year
Anyone under the age of 21 who has made a significant contribution by giving up their time to make a difference to the community.
• Environmental Champion
An individual who in a voluntary capacity has led, delivered or supported work aimed at making Ilkley greener.
• Outstanding Citizen Award
Awarded to an individual who has made a difference to their local community. This could be a neighbour who goes above and beyond or someone who organises and delivers local activities and events.
The Citizen Award Scheme is a fantastic way to bring the community together, celebrate the kindness and generosity of Ilkley residents, and inspire future generations to follow in their footsteps.
Councillor Gibson added:
"This scheme is all about celebrating what makes Ilkley so special – the people.
"We encourage everyone to think about those who have made a difference in their lives and in the community, and to nominate them for this well-deserved recognition."
Nominations for the Citizen Award Scheme are now open, and will close on 31 January 2025.
